Product Details

Operators of a cotton gin factory before the War, Samuel Griswold and his partner Arvin Gunnison were one of only three manufacturers that took advantage of the interest-free loans and generous contract terms the Confederate government offered to southern factories who would convert their facilities over to producing sidearms for the Confederate Army. Of the three, Griswold and Gunnison was the only company that achieved any success as gun-makers.

In 1862, the Confederacy gave them the go-ahead to produce as many pistols as they could, to supply troops that were carrying everything from Colt dragoons to antique flintlocks, but the South never caught up to the North in sheer numbers of armaments, owing to a dire shortage of raw materials.

The Griswold and Gunnison pistol was a near-exact copy of the .36 caliber percussion cap and ball 1851 Colt Navy revolver, except it had a brass frame instead of steel -- due to the scarcity of metals in the south--and its barrel was round rather than octagonal. It was a good quality weapon, but the factory was only able to produce about 3,600 pieces before it was destroyed by Sherman during his 1864 march through Georgia.

Because of the unique historic connection with the South, this Griswold and Gunnison Navy-type revolver is an excellent choice for rebel re-enactors. You'll be the envy of all the other "Rebs" when you show off this handsome replica of one of the few Confederate-made revolvers by F.LLI Pietta.

"Griswold & Gunnison reproduction"

Review: This is a well done reproduction, better quality than the originals were. I was so impressed with how it feels and shot I bought another. Being a brass frame, its been my experience that eventually the steel cylinder will embed itself into the brass enough to open the spacing the cylinder and barrel...just as the originals did...Especially with heavy loads. When this happens, and it begins throwing flames, years from now, I'll make the first a wall hanger and begin shooting the other. I collect ... More details

Review: I purchased this revolver because it is a nice quality repro of a Confederate counterfeit gun. I also like it because, just like the 1862 Dance Bros, it has that last ditch look with a brass frame and a round barrel. The best part was that it shot very well out of the box because, unlike Uberti, Pietta seems to be maintaining better quality control on their products at this time. I was also very impressed by the great customer service provided by EMF. I had this revolver on backorder and when I ... More details

Review: I knew this pistol was going to be a winner from the get go. It was tight, timed perfectly and had minimal cylinder gap. I didn't need an air wrench to get the nipples off nor a jack hammer to get the wedge out, rare for Pietta revolvers. I took it out the next day to shoot and was even happier that I got it. I loaded it with 18 grains of 3f Swiss powder under a .380 round ball. I got a 3.5 inch group at 20 feet while holding with two shaky hands while trying to get my shots over my chronograph.... More details

Review: This is a nice little brass framed Black Powder revolver. It was my 12th one. Several of my others are also made by Pietta so the quality of this one was no surprise. EMF was really good about customer service. They contacted me several times to try and work out shipping arrangements for a time when I would be home. I will likely order from them again if I can find something in stock I don't already own.
